Day 248 – Fort Pierce to Melbourne Harbor Marina, Melbourne, FL - March 10, 2012

We got underway at 7:30 this morning.  The forecast is for decent weather this morning, but possible showers in the afternoon, so the quicker we get to Melbourne the better.  Today’s travels take us through some really different looking portions of the Atlantic ICW.  In this area, the ICW follows the Indian River.  As we started out this morning, the river was almost two miles wide.  When we get near Vero Beach, the river begins to fill with small islands and the channel is barely a tenth of a mile wide.  Many of the islands we pass could have been located anywhere in the US; they are covered with ordinary trees (no palm trees) and shrubs.  Suddenly we are out of the islands and the river widens out again – back to its two mile width.  We get a brief rain shower not long before we arrive in Melbourne, but it clears us before we pull into the marina and we get tied up in our slip without needing to wear our raincoats.
