Day 238 – Key Largo, FL to Boca Chita Key, FL - February 29, 2012

Our destination for today is Boca Chita Key which is in the Biscayne Bay National Park.  The first twenty miles of our trip was in Hawk Channel.  The waves were in the 1 to 2 foot range and most of the time they were from a direction that wasn’t too annoying.  We used Angelfish Creek to cut through from Hawk Channel to Biscayne Bay.  The creek was well marked and quite deep.  Traveling in Biscayne Bay was very easy, although it was important to follow the marked channel as there are sections that had to be dredged through VERY shallow water.

Boca Chita Key was originally privately owned and there is still an ornamental lighthouse located on the island that was built by one of the former owners.  The island is very small with a beautiful little harbor and a few campsites.  Since Fred has a National Parks pass, we were able to tie up to the breakwall in the harbor for just $10.00 for the night.  Other than the amazing number of mosquitoes, it was a great place to stay for the night.
