Day 240 – Miami, FL to Bahia Mar Yachting Center, Fort Lauderdale, FL - March 2, 2012

We had the anchor up and were moving by 9:00am.  It was a beautiful day to travel.  We started by traveling through Miami, then on past Sunny Isles Beach, Hollywood Beach and Dania Beach.  Finally we traveled through Port Everglades and into Fort Lauderdale.  We are back to counting bridges – we went through thirteen bridges today, just three of them had to open for us, so we weren’t slowed up very much waiting for bridges to open.  Because of all the bridges in this section of Florida, many boaters choose to travel outside in the ocean – although that might be fun, we are definitely enjoying our travel on the Atlantic ICW.

Port Everglades is the first major deep-water port we have seen in quite awhile.  There is a very large container ship loading dock here and many cruise ships start and end their tours in this port.  We saw at least five container ships and two cruise ships as we passed through.  The other thing we saw passing through Port Everglades are the largest private yachts we have ever seen - yacht after yacht, many of them well over 100 feet in length and clearly a few over 200 feet long.  It is amazing to see these yachts up close and personal.

We have a reservation at Bahia Mar Yachting Center in Fort Lauderdale for the next three nights – we are taking the advice we have received from other Loopers about not traveling in this part of Florida during the weekend.  Bahia Mar is another place where the really big boats hang out.  We are definitely one of the “little fish” in this marina.
