Day 35 - in Spring Lake at Kennan Marina - August 10, 2011

We spent another day/night at Keenan Marina.  We unloaded the bikes and rode into Grand Haven and out to Grand Haven State Park where we could check out the waves on Lake Michigan.  The wind has been blowing hard from the west for the past two days, so we thought we’d see some amazing waves.  Although the waves were big, they didn’t seem as serious as those we saw when we were in Muskegon.  The wave action inside the break walls however was amazing.  Unlike some harbor entrances that use stone to help break-up the wave action coming off Lake Michigan, the break walls on the Grand River have no stone, just sheet piling.  As a result, the waves come in the channel, bounce off the wall and create a mess of waves going in every direction – when you are in it in your boat, it’s like trying to boat in an enormous washing machine on the agitation cycle.
