Day 28 - Muskegon, Harbor Towne Marina - August 3, 2011

Another day in Muskegon.  We did laundry in the morning and walked to the Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum in the afternoon.  The museum is built around two different vessels, the USS Silversides SS-236 and US Coast Guard Cutter McLane W-146.  The USS Silversides is the most famous surviving submarine of World War II.  She sunk more ships and took down more tonnage than any other surviving WWII submarine.  The tour allowed us to walk throughout the entire sub.  The USCGC McLane was commissioned in April 1927 and patrolled in California, Alaska and Texas.  Again we had the chance to tour most of the boat, inside and out.

We then finished our walk by heading to the break wall at the entrance of the channel into Muskegon Lake.  It was very windy and kite boarders were enjoying the strong wind and small waves in the shadow of the break wall.  We walked out to the lighthouse and watched the waves crashing over the end of the break wall and up onto the lighthouse.
