Day 351 – Croton-on-Hudson, NY to Kingston City Marina, Kingston, NY - June 21, 2012

The Hudson River is a beautiful place to travel.  As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, once we passed under the George Washington Bridge the scenery really changed and became very beautiful – today it was even better.  We passed through the Adirondack Mountains and under the Bear Mountain Bridge.  If you hike the Adirondack Trail, you use the Bear Mountain Bridge to cross the Hudson River.  I took so many pictures today of beautiful mountains, valleys, rock cliffs, trees and bridges that I will have a hard time deciding which ones to post.  And no matter how good the camera, the pictures are never as good as being there.

We motored by the U.S. Military Academy at WestPoint where according to their mission statement they “educate, train and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the Unites States Army.”  If the mission statement isn’t impressive enough, the campus that can be seen from the Hudson River certainly is.  We are looking forward to our “land” tour of WestPoint on Saturday.  We are planning to stay in Kingston for a few days and rent a car for some touring.

The scenery continued to be spectacular and we passed many beautiful homes, a few interesting structures you can only see from the river and a lighthouse or two.  It was another scorching hot day and we enjoyed the breeze across the boat as we moved up the river.  Just before we arrived in Kingston, we got a call on the radio from Deb and Gary on Foray (they were passing us – also on their way toward Kingston).  The last time we saw Foray was in the St. Johns River, just outside of Jacksonville, FL.  Once we were all settled in our slips, the crews from Boreas, Foray and Something Special headed for dinner and enjoyed catching up on everyone’s recent adventures.

the trip along the Hudson River is beatuiful even in the haze

there are train tracks on both sides of the river - the passenger trains seem
to use the east side while the freight trains use the tracks on the west

if you look closely, you will see we are reaching "Worlds End" and the
water is over 170 feet deep - pretty amazing depth for a river

the mountains are absolutely beautiful

a replica of a medieval castle - the castle burned in 1967
