Days 279 to 281 – at Isle of Hope Marina, Savannah, GA - April 10-12, 2012

We end up spending four nights at Isle of Hope Marina.  They have a deal where you stay for three nights and get the fourth one free which turns out to be an unplanned deal for us.  Our two night original plan turns in to three nights and who in their right mind would pass up a free night of dockage!

We borrow the marina’s courtesy car and head into Savannah for dinner (and a little bit of exploring) on our first night at the marina.  The dinner is wonderful and we make plans for more touring the next day.  Unfortunately an inverter problem on Once Around shuffles the schedule around and we spend a few hours with the courtesy car doing errands right near the marina (West Marine, WalMart, etc.) followed by boat chores and laundry.

To help solve their inverter problems, Frank and Carrie end up renting a car.  Keeping the car for an extra day gives us a full day of exploring in Savannah.  We get into Savannah and park in their huge new underground structure.  On the recommendation of Loopers Garth and Kathy on Algonquin, we get tickets for the Old Town Trolley tour.  This trolley gives you a 90 minute tour of the city with commentary by the trolley driver.  You also have on and off privileges for the entire day – you can get off at a stop where you’d like to explore more and then hop back on to continue your tour.  This was a great way to see Savannah’s historic squares and learn a bit of the city’s history.

The book (and movie) “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil” was mentioned a number of times during the tour and Frank decides he needs to add these two items to his collection.  A trip to one of the gift shops in the City Market portion of town and we’re all set.  We head back to the boats and Frank and Carrie invite us over for a matinee showing of the movie.  What a great way to end the day.  Watching the movie after touring the town was perfect – many of the places we saw on our trolley tour were featured in the movie and the story highlights lots of colorful characters who make Savannah their home.
