Day 282 – Isle of Hope Marina to Shelter Cove Marina, Hilton Head Island, SC - April 13, 2012

Shortly after our departure from the Isle of Hope Marina we passed the Bonaventure Cemetery made famous in the book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”.  The Bird Girl statue from the photograph on the book’s cover once stood in this cemetery, but has since been moved and is now on loan to the Telfair Museum of Art.  Soon after passing the cemetery, we crossed the Savannah River and entered South Carolina.  I think we did an excellent job choosing our travel windows to safely traverse the notoriously shallow waters of Georgia.
We finished today’s journey by passing behind Daufuskie Island and then crossing Calibogue Sound to the back (non ocean) side of Hilton Head Island.  We had hoped to stay at Harbor Town Yacht Basin near the Hilton Head Lighthouse, but due to a professional golf tournament taking place on one of the courses in Harbor Town, they were completely full.  Our next choice was Shelter Cove Marina, about five miles up Broad Creek.  This turned out to be an excellent choice.  The ride up Broad Creek took us past many beautiful homes and the resort where the marina is located is simply beautiful.  If you are looking for a resort type marina to stay and really relax, this is it.
