Day 273 – Fernandina Harbor Marina to anchorage at Cumberland Island - April 4, 2012

We are traveling less than eight miles today so that we can stop and visit Cumberland Island.  Cumberland Island is known for its wild horses and beautiful beach and we wanted to get a look at both.  The island is a National Seashore and as a result most of it will remain in its primitive state; no road or causeway from the mainland will ever be constructed.  The federal government owns approximately 85 percent of the island.  There is a nice anchorage just to the west of the island so we dropped the hook and took the dinghy to shore.  The walk across the island was beautiful and a wooden boardwalk took us over the dunes to the beach.  Cumberland Island was well worth the stop – hopefully the pictures will show some of the beauty we saw here.

this must have been really good stuff  to eat because the horses
stayed in this spot for a long time
