Days 308, 309 & 310 – at Manteo Waterfront Marina, Manteo, NC - May 9-11, 2012

Due to some work on a railroad bridge that crosses the ICW just before the ICW enters Norfolk we are staying put here in Manteo for a few more days.  The bridge work is keeping the railroad bridge closed to navigation from 6:00am to 8:00pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Additionally, poor weather forecasts (thunderstorms and lots of wind) have given us additional reasons to stay in Manteo.  So, we are now planning to meet our friends Greg and Kate from Grianan in Elizabeth City on Saturday and then travel with them through the Dismal Swamp (staying at the Dismal Swamp Welcome Center on Sunday) and then on to Norfolk on Monday.  Greg and Kate just completed their Loop, but are staying on their boat and cruising in the Chesapeake Bay for awhile.

We have done a bit more walking through the town of Manteo and have spent additional time exploring Roanoke Island Festival Park.  The park is an interactive historic site representing the first English settlement attempt in 1585.  It includes an American Indian Town, a settlement site, the Roanoke Adventure Museum and the Elizabeth II, a 16th century representative ship (Boreas is docked just across the bay from the Elizabeth II).  The park is beautiful and they have done a great job putting together interactive exhibits that children (and adults) can enjoy.
