Day 301 – Morehead City, NC to River Dunes Harbor Club, Oriental, NC - May 2, 2012

We had another beautiful travel day today.  For the first time in quite awhile we saw a couple of tow boats (one with a barge and one without).  We also experienced the biggest water we’ve seen in quite awhile.  Lately we’ve been cruising along the intercoastal in narrow rivers and man-made channels with the occasional smallish inlet to the ocean.  The Cape Fear River (at about 1.5 miles wide) was probably the largest body of water we have seen recently.  Today we got into the Neuse River and we could see out into Pamlico Sound.  The Neuse River is about four miles across where we entered and we then traveled about ten miles down the river to just short of where it meets Pamlico Sound.  Pamlico Sound is very big – over 85 miles from one end to the other and around 25 miles wide at it’s widest.  As a result of all this “big water” we actually had waves today – under one footers, but still quite a change from what we’ve seen lately.  Almost like being back in the Great Lakes and our home waters of Saginaw Bay.

We have quite a few larger sounds to traverse over the next few days, so we will be paying a bit more attention to wind and weather.

  1. Hi guys,
we are in the middle of Dismal Swamp. We have been looking for snakes and wildlife all day. We heard lots of birds, saw frogs and turtles, but your photo of the water mocassasin took my breath away. We only saw a baby puff adder swimming across the chanel. . Tomorrow we hope to see Drummond lake and view more wildlife.
Miss you guys, it has been a while
