July 10, 2019 - at Houghton County Marina, Hancock, MI

We spent the morning on a Fred led walking tour of the Michigan Technological University (MTU) campus.  We stopped in the student union and added to our collection of MTU logo wear and we checked out the various buildings where Fred spent his time while he was here on campus.

A college campus is an amazing time machine because although there have been changes since Fred left, there are still many buildings that remain generally unchanged.  The same library is still there, but it now has an addition and an elevated, covered walkway connecting it to the
building next door.  The Civil/Geology Building looks exactly the same (Fred took a quick peek inside), but it has a new name.  The dorm Fred spent his freshman year in looks unchanged, but the husky statue in the middle of campus is new.

The other excitement for the day was an opportunity to watch the Houghton/Hancock lift bridge in operation.  The boat that takes visitors to Isle Royale came through in the mid-afternoon and required the bridge to be raised from its usual 31’8” clearance up to 75’ clearance.  What a great feat of engineering to watch!
